Stay legal

Compliance, payload & GVM

The single most important thing to get right before you buy a slide-on.

What is GVM and payload?

Your ute has a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) — the maximum it can legally weigh when fully loaded. Subtract the kerb weight (the ute as it sits, with fuel) from the GVM and you get your payload: everything you can add — a camper, water, gear, accessories and people.

Why it matters

A loaded slide-on camper can push a ute past its rated GVM. Driving overweight can void insurance, attract fines and defects, and compromise braking and handling. Many slide-on installs on the road today are technically illegal — which is exactly why we built a payload checker into every product page.

How our payload check works

We take the published kerb and GVM for your exact model, subtract the camper's dry weight, your selected options, and a sensible allowance for water, fit-out and occupants, then show you a clear green / amber / red verdict.

  • Green — comfortable margin within payload.
  • Amber — legal but tight; watch your water and load.
  • Red — over payload as configured; change the build or upgrade your GVM.

GVM upgrades

If your result is red, the common fix is a GVM upgrade — a certified suspension and rating change that raises your legal maximum. These are fitted by accredited installers and certified for your state.

Important

This is an estimate based on published kerb and GVM figures and indicative weights. Confirm actual weights and legality with a licensed engineer and your state road authority before travelling. We provide estimates to help you plan; we don't provide legal or engineering advice.
